Open an image 500x250.

In Layer Manager, select the base image, right click and duplicate it.

Select the bucket fill tool, then choose two colours - one for the colour to show under your lettering and one for the colour to surround it. I am using two shades of yellow - the one in the Colour Picker for the base layer and a paler one, changing the Hex value to the one shown below right, for the surround (top layer). Fill your layers with your colours. To fill a layer, make the colour you wish to use the foreground colour, in Layer Manager select the layer you wish to fill with that colour, and click with the bucket fill tool in the centre of your image. When you fill the base layer you will not see a change in the image, but the layer's colour will change in the Layer Manager.

Select the Text Tool and set up the font and size you wish to use. Choose 2D object and a colour which contrasts well with your surround colour.

Type your text.

On the next page we will transform the text into carved text, and look at some other uses for this technique.
